Laser Cleaning Specific Applications:

1. Stone Artifacts

Applications: Cleans black crusts, dirt, microorganisms (moss, lichens), old, inadequate restoration materials, and graffiti from the surfaces of ancient buildings, grottoes, and statues.

2. Metal Artifacts

Applications: Removes harmful rust (such as powdery rust from bronze disease and chlorides on iron) from bronze and iron artifacts, while preserving dense, stable, beneficial rust (patina). It can also remove dirt, oil, and old coatings from the surface.

3. Murals and Paintings

Applications: Extremely finely removes smoke, dust, salt deposits, and inappropriate coverings from murals, restoring their original colors. This is one of the most challenging applications, requiring extremely gentle laser parameters.

4. Bone Artifacts and Ivory

Applications: Removes surface dirt and discoloration, restoring the original appearance.

Advantage Dimensions:

  1. Extreme Precision and Control: The cleaning process can be precisely controlled down to the micron level by adjusting wavelength, energy, and pulse frequency. This allows for layer-by-layer cleaning, ensuring “removal of dirt and preservation of authenticity.”

2. Environmentally friendly and safe: Clean and safe. Eliminating the use of potentially harmful chemicals prevents restorers from coming into contact with toxic chemicals and eliminates the potential for chemical residues to remain within the artifact and potentially impact it in the future.

3. Complying with the ethics of cultural heritage conservation: Perfectly aligned with the principles of “minimum intervention” and “identifiability.” While harmful substances are removed, the intervention is minimal and controllable, and the application of the new technology itself is identifiable.
